French prosecutors have officially opened a judicial investigation into X, according to a May 7, 2026 statement from the Paris Prosecutor’s Office.
The official document lists multiple allegations tied to the platform’s operations, including unlawful collection of personal data, processing user information without sufficient security measures, extraction of data from automated systems, and violations involving the secrecy of electronic communications.
Following the announcement, Telegram founder Pavel Durov publicly criticized French authorities, claiming the government was accusing X of practices it allegedly engages in itself. His comments quickly spread across social media and reignited debate over government surveillance, platform regulation, and digital privacy in Europe.
The investigation appears broader than previous European regulatory actions against major technology platforms. The prosecutor’s statement also references alleged fraudulent data processing practices, illicit online platform activity, and AI-related concerns involving Grok, the artificial intelligence system associated with X and xAI.
The case adds to growing regulatory pressure on Elon Musk’s companies across Europe, where authorities have increasingly targeted large digital platforms over moderation policies, privacy standards, and compliance with national laws. Critics argue the move could intensify concerns over selective enforcement and expanding state control over online communications.
