Alternative inflation tracker Truflation showed U.S. CPI running at 2.00% year-over-year on May 8, down slightly by 0.01% from the previous day, signaling that inflation pressures remain relatively contained despite volatility earlier this year.
The latest trend suggests inflation may be stabilizing near the Federal Reserve’s long-term target range after months of sharp swings. Truflation’s real-time CPI model shows inflation rebounding steadily from February lows below 1%, with the index now returning to levels last seen in mid-2025.
According to Truflation, transportation-related costs were the primary upward driver in the latest update, led by increases in gasoline and motor oil prices. Energy-sensitive categories have recently become one of the biggest variables affecting short-term inflation expectations as oil prices and fuel markets remain volatile.
At the same time, food inflation continued showing signs of easing. Both “Food Away from Home” and “Food at Home” categories moved lower, reinforcing the broader trend of slowing consumer price pressures across several core spending areas.
The divergence between rising transport costs and cooling food prices highlights a market increasingly shaped by sector-specific inflation rather than broad-based price acceleration. That could become important for Federal Reserve policymakers, who continue watching whether inflation remains sticky across services and consumer essentials.
For markets, the return toward 2% inflation may strengthen expectations that the Fed is moving closer to eventual monetary easing, especially if upcoming official CPI reports confirm the cooling trend. Lower inflation expectations typically support risk assets including equities and cryptocurrencies by reducing pressure on Treasury yields and interest rates.
However, investors are likely to remain cautious as energy prices continue fluctuating. A sustained rebound in fuel costs could complicate the inflation outlook later this year, particularly if consumer demand remains resilient.
