OpenAI is partnering with Oracle, SoftBank, and local company Sur Energy to construct massive data centers in Patagonia. Patagonia's advantages are clear: cold, dry weather cuts cooling costs dramatically, land is plentiful and affordable, and renewable energy from wind and hydro provides sustainable power. These conditions make it one of the most economical and environmentally sound locations for energy-hungry AI operations anywhere in the world.
President Javier Milei's government is backing the project with tax incentives through the Large Investment Incentives Program (RIGI). Still, hurdles remain around upgrading internet connectivity and managing water resources for long-term operations.
Remembering Matías Travizano
The late Matías Travizano, an Argentine physicist, Sur Energy co-founder, and Silicon Valley veteran, played a crucial role in making this project happen. He built the partnerships between government and industry that brought the investment to life. His unexpected death last month cast a shadow over the announcement. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman honored his contribution, saying the project wouldn't exist without Travizano's work.
