Vague Openings
There are 5 openings in the social media giant. The openings are related to blockchain engineering, data science and marketing. Facebook has not been much clear on the exact descriptions what the applicants actual job description is. The data scientist opening, for example, tells about the blockchain team’s work as the “ultimate goal is to help billions of people with access to things they don’t have now – that could be things like equitable financial services, new ways to save, or new ways to share information.”
Even the software engineer required for blockchain has vague description on what the job is about, “Facebook is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to join the Software Engineering (Infrastructure) team. The Software Engineering (Infrastructure) team builds large distributed components that run Facebook.”
For a firm that is so large and professional, the descriptions being not so clear only mean that the social media platform is not ready to reveal what it intends to use blockchain technology for. Of the long description it has, the only meaningful reason it gives of the decentralized technology is to use it for “new ways to save, or new ways to share information.”
A Startup Within Facebook
Facebook’s own blockchain team was set up in May this year. Headedby ex-Vice President of its Messenger app division, David Marcus, the team was founded to look into the options of applications of the decentralized technology. Evan Cheng, a senior software engineer, has also been shifted to the team as is Director of Engineering.
The team, now expanding, looks like will finally be upgraded. The website claims that it is treating the team and its work just like a startup, with access to all of the resources of the social media giant.
