Goodbye YouTube: PewDiePie Shifts to Blockchain Video Platform DLive

Saad Ullah

Top YouTube content creator PiewDiePie has announced that he is shifting his Vlog to DLive, a blockchain based content sharing platform.

Changing Channels

PiewDiePie, whose real name is Felix Kjellberg, is the biggest content creator on Google’s owned YouTube. He currently has 93 million subscribers and has a net worth estimated to range from USD 30 million to 50 million.

In a video he uploaded to his YouTube channel, PiewDiePie announced his decision to leave the video content giant and move to a decentralized platform, DLive. The decision by the social media star comes from two major facts.

One, he said that he has supported decentralization and as a firm believer, he chose to use a DLive, a blockchain based content sharing platform.

Secondly, YouTube, acting as a middleman, takes a significant cut from content creators’ earnings in the form of commission for hosting their channel and videos. This, fee, according to PiewDiePie, was excessive.

DLive, on the other hand, has pledged to never take commission or other forms of cuts from content creators. DLive, being blockchain based, is also a transparent platform and all monetization of services are readily available to content creators to review and know how much they have earned.

Founder Wilson Wei said, “DLive is a place where instead of competing against each other, it benefits creators to support one another. PewDiePie has always been a fierce advocate for the value that creators bring with their hard work, time and effort, and he believes in DLive’s vision.”

PiewDiePie, in his video, said, “I’m excited to start live-streaming again regularly. DLive is great for me because I’m treated like a real partner just like all of the other streamers on their unique platform.”

High Number of Views

The video concerning the switch of platforms has been watched nearly 4.5 million times on YouTube and has garnered responses that are touching 40,000 in number.

PiewDiePie has not even started publishing in DLive and already has seen 76,000 followers. He has promised to upload his first video on the platform on 14th April. He will be distributing anywhere from USD 10,000 to 50,000 in Lino to help other content creators to use the platform.

PiewDiePie has been noted for his controversial video logging at times. He once made a few videos where the Nazi symbol was used in a fail attempt at humor. Although taken very seriously all over the world, YouTube had decided not to ban his channel (owing to the massive amount of revenue his channel generates), but only canceled his series of videos that depicted anti-Semitic ideas.
